8. A TRANSPORTATION GRAVEYARD
Lake Washington in Seattle is unique mainly because of the sheer number of planes, trains, and boats found abandoned in the water, among other things- making it a kind of graveyard.

7. A GHOST TOWN
Upon the completion of the Buchanan Dam in 1937, around 20,000 acres of land in the Texas counties of Llano and Burnet were submerged by the rising Colorado River waters, including the town of Bluffton, which was located along Old Highway 29. Some 50 families were forced to relocate and sell their land to Lower Colorado River Authority.

6. MISSING CARS...AND PEOPLE
In 2013, police testing sonar equipment discovered two long-missing vehicles at the bottom of Foss Lake in Elk City, Oklahoma. One of the cars, which had gone missing on November 20, 1970, was a blue 1969 Camaro. Tragically, the bodies of three teenagers who had gone missing at the same time were found inside the car.

5. A STONEHENGE STRUCTURE
In 2007, a bizarre, seemingly ancient object was discovered at the bottom of Lake Michigan by a team of archaeologists from Northwestern Michigan University College, who were scanning the water for shipwrecks. Among the ruins was what appeared to be a carving of a mastodon, along with a series of boulders arranged in a “Stonehenge-like” manner.

4. A STATUE OF JESUS
The mastodon carving and Stonehenge-like assembly aren’t the only odd things that have been found at the bottom of Lake Michigan. There’s also a, 11-foot-tall, 1,850-pound Italian marble statue of Jesus. It sits underneath 22 feet of water, at the bottom of Traverse Bay, and boasts the title of the world’s only crucifix that is submerged in freshwater.

3. A MYSTERY AIRPLANE
It’s fascinating enough to find an entire airplane at the bottom of a water body, but when nobody knows where the plane came from and can’t trace it to any known crashes, things get downright creepy! That’s what happened in September 2013, when firefighters from the Charlotte, North Carolina Fire Department, who were using sonar, discovered a sunken seaplane in Lake Norman.

2. UNDERWATER TEA PARTY
In May 2015, a concerned snorkeler called the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona regarding suspected human remains at the bottom of the Cienega Springs boat launch. Now, that would be a scary thing to discover during a leisurely swim!

1. A PROSTHETIC LEG
In 2016, a 49-year-old Green Bay, Wisconsin man named Mark Warner lost his prosthetic leg when his canoe overturned during a fishing trip on Range Line Lake in Wabeno. Although it wasn’t Warner’s “everyday leg,” but an older one that he used specifically for outdoor activities like fishing, he still wanted it back, and posted an ad on Craiglist in search of it.

9. Water on Mars
Many books, TV shows, and movies have fantasized about colonizing the planet Mars. The only problem is that Mars is not a place that can sustain life in its current state, and just as bad, it does not have any water...or so we thought. In 2018, scans from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered that formations on the planet were actually caused by water that is still there right now.

8. Multiple "Earths"
In February 2017, NASA discovered that there might be 7 Earth-like planets orbiting a dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. In fact, all seven of these planets were found in the same galaxy, which is a very rare thing indeed.

7. Liquid on Titan
Saturn has 53 moons that have been named by scientists, and more could actually be named in the future. One of the most popular of these moons is the one known as Titan. It's been the source of much research, and has even been home to an alien race in the Marvel Comics Universe. During a scan by the Cassini Space Probe of NASA, they found that in certain gorges and canyons of Titan, there are actually pools of liquid, specifically hydrocarbons.

6. Comet Soup
In 2005, NASA sent their Deep Impact spacecraft into a comet called Tempel 1. If you're curious as to why they would destroy one of their craft by crashing it into a comet on purpose, it is because they wanted to analyze the content and particles that were released from the impact.

5. Saturn's Rings
The Rings of Saturn are not only the most defining features of the planet, but also one of the most recognizable things in all of our solar system. Strangely enough NASA speculates that the rings are "dying".

4. Jupiter's Orbit
NASA has long tried to get a spacecraft into Jupiter's orbit. But because of conditions in the planet's atmosphere, it's been a very difficult task. Not to mention, getting a craft near the planet in terms of its position in space is also hard. Yet, on July 4th, 2016, the Juno became the first spacecraft to make it into Jupiter's orbit, which by NASA's own admission was one of the hardest things they've ever done.

3. Supermassive Black Hole
The Hubble Space Telescope is one of NASA's biggest tools in regards to searching deep space for new discoveries, and in February of 2016, the telescope took a picture of a galaxy and found a black hole of astonishing size.

2. Ice Volcanoes
On Earth, volcanoes spew fire, ash, soot, and smoke, but on the dwarf planet (a planet that never matured to full size) called Ceres, the volcanoes ice! This was discovered by NASA via their Dawn Spacecraft in 2015, which was observing Ceres (which orbits between Mars and Jupiter).

1. Reaching Ultima Thule
4 billion miles away from Earth, there is an object known as Ultima Thule. This "celestial body" is actually two round objects made of an unknown composition that are actually fused together. NASA has released the first up-close stereo images of this celestial body via the New Horizons spacecraft, making this the most distant object that a spacecraft from Earth has ever explored.

10. Mutilated Great White Sharks
During a 3 day period in May of 2017, four of the world’s most fearsome predators washed up on the beaches of South Africa’s Western Cape province. The following month, another Great White Shark was found… and each of them was mutilated in a similar way. They were all missing chunks out of their bodies as well as their livers, which had been ripped out, and there were other signs of mutilations- such as missing stomachs and testes.

9. Palm Oil
In 2017, 13 beaches in Hong Kong had to be closed because of disgusting deposits that began to be washed ashore. The Styrofoam-like clumps were soon discovered to be made up of palm oil, which had been released into the ocean during the collision of two ships in the Pearl River estuary.

8. Ice Balls
In 2013, residents around Lake Michigan found hundreds of giant ice balls along the shoreline. Each of them weighed as much as 50 pounds and, surprisingly, they’re actually quite common. They occur during the winter, as a result of a weather phenomenon that sees a combination of wind and wave action against the shore.

7. 200 Million-Year-Old Fossil
Storms are often responsible for churning up all kinds of material from the sea and depositing it on the beach. In 2014, a beachcomber on the Jurassic Coast, in the English county of Dorset, made an incredible discovery. Embedded in the rocks, he found the skeleton of a five-foot long, toothy animal that resembled a dolphin- but actually turned out to be a 200 million-year-old Ichthyosaur.

6. Deep Sea Fish
In 2015, two co-workers were walking along the beach on Catalina Island in California, when they came across a strange 13.5-foot long carcass. It was unlike anything they had seen before and is something rarely seen by most people- as it was a deep sea oarfish that usually lives at depths of between 660 and 3000 feet.

5. Sea Pickles
It may not be the greatest surprise to hear that weird things have washed up on the beaches of Oregon, but the waters are full of peculiar jelly-like translucent creatures that look like slugs. They first began appearing in 2015, but by 2017 there were millions in the region, with many of them washing up on the shoreline.

4. Cannonballs
In Charleston, South Carolina, live cannonballs from the Revolutionary and Civil wars are often found around the city… and wash up on the shores. Most of them are inactive lumps of metal, but others still have the ability to explode. They're most commonly found during construction projects, but following Hurricane Matthew in 2016, 15 civil war cannonballs washed ashore on Folly Beach.

3. E.T
In 2011, 76-year-old Margaret Wells of Cosham, in England, was devastated when her home was robbed. They took all of her jewelry, an iron, and her beloved life-sized E.T figure that her daughter had made for her. She thought she'd never see it again, but was surprised in early 2012 when she received a call from police to tell her that they had found it!!

2. Giant Sea Monster
The communities living on Seram island in Indonesia rely on the sea for their livelihoods and probably have seen virtually everything that it has to offer. In 2017, though, something washed up on the shore of Hulung beach that made them all realize that there were mysterious things in the depths.

1. Whiskey Galore
It’s not often that something great washes ashore but, in 1941, residents of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland were in for a treat. On the morning of February 5th, the SS Politician was passing by- having left Liverpool, England, on its way to Kingston, Jamaica, and New Orleans.

8. Disappearance of the Kaz II
On April 15, 2007, a trio of novice sailors departed from the Australian Whitsunday islands in a newly-purchased yacht called the Kaz II. The skipper, Des Batten, and two brothers named Peter and John Tunstead, were headed home to Western Australia and expected the trip to take around two months.

7. Cannibal Shark
In November 2003, researchers tagged a nine-foot-long female great white shark off the southwestern Australian coast with the goal of recording her behaviour, ambient temperatures and depth. According to data, four months later she dove to a depth of roughly 1,900 feet (580 meters), suggesting she was attacked by something much bigger in the depths of the ocean.

6. 1968 Submarine Disappearances
In 1968, four naval submarines mysteriously vanished. It was the deadliest post-World War II year for submariners. The disappearances occurred in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In total, 318 sailors from Israel, the Soviet Union, France, and the United States were never seen again and were presumed to have entered eternal rest at sea.

5. Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle is a roughly 500,000-square-mile parcel of ocean between Bermuda, the Greater Antilles, and the Atlantic coast of the Florida panhandle. It’s infamous for its unexplainable disappearances over the years, including over 50 ships and at least 20 airplanes.

4. The Phantom Island of Bermeja
To the northwest of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico lies an island - well, not anymore, actually. The uninhabited island is - or was - known as Bermeja and it first appeared on a Portuguese map in 1535. Maps drawn by Spanish explorers during the 16th and 17th centuries commonly featured Bermeja, with just slight variations in its location and name, which was to be expected back then.

3. Milky Sea Phenomenon
While most ocean mysteries of the past, such as the existence of monsters, have long-since been debunked by the scientific community, one strange marvel still exists, but is yet to be explained. It’s called the milky sea phenomenon. The spectacle was first mentioned by author Jules Verne in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It wasn’t recorded in modern logs until 1995, when the British merchant vessel the SS Lima made note of it while sailing in the Indian Ocean.

2. Blobus Purplus
In 2016, scientists from Ocean Exploration Trust aboard the research ship E/V Nautilus discovered an enigmatic purple blob on the ocean floor near the Channel Island National Marine Sanctuary off California, deep in the Arguello Canyon. They recovered the specimen using a remotely operated vehicle and once they brought it up, everyone on board was confused.

In 1997, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recorded an extremely loud, ultralow-frequency, never-before-heard sound in the South Pacific. If you don't remember, here it is.

10. Who Built It?
For being one of the oldest monuments in the world, the Sphinx is still full of riddles. With such uncertainty about its age and purpose, there’s still a great deal of debate about who exactly was responsible for the original construction of the Great Sphinx. For thousands of years much of the Sphinx lay buried underneath the sand, with just the head sticking out.

9. Is it complete?
The Great Sphinx is 240 feet long from paw to tail, 66.31 feet tall, and 62 feet wide and was carved from a single mass of limestone. but is it actually complete? Discoveries found in the area around the structure imply that its builders left in a hurry, and may have had much grander plans for it.

8. The Sphinx Temples
The Sphinx has two temples associated with it, one that's directly in front of it that has been traced back to the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt, and one that's to the northeast of the structure that is linked with the New Kingdom. The Old Kingdom temple was built from the same limestone blocks as the Sphinx itself, which many people think suggests the entire complex, including the valley temple of Khafre, was built at the same time.

7. Who Does It Depict?
While the structure itself is commonly referred to as a sphinx, the face is thought to be a representation of an actual person, but their identity is not known for sure. Most Egyptologists think it’s the face of Khafre, the pharaoh I already mentioned. There are, though, no inscriptions to confirm this, nor is there any record of its construction…

6. The Beard
You may be surprised to hear that The Sphinx once had a beard! Due to erosion, it eventually had to be removed. The remains of this beard can be seen in the British Museum and the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo, but there are some that believe it wasn't an original feature of the statue.

5. When Was It Built?
Even though it seems as if the Sphinx was built at a similar time to the surrounding structures, there’s still great debate about its origins. One of the strangest pieces of evidence that’s raised questions is the way that the stone on the Sphinx has signs of erosion that appears to have been caused by water, as opposed to wind and sand. This is unique to the Sphinx, and not seen on any other structures on the plateau.

4. The Missing Nose
When you look at the Sphinx, there’s one feature that stands out the most… its missing nose. There have been a number of theories about what happened, and you’ve probably heard the story that it was destroyed by a cannonball fired by one of Napoleon’s soldiers. The problem is, there are a series of sketches of the Sphinx that were made before the time of Napoleon, and these too show the statue without a nose, so the popular legend is disproven.

3. It’s not a Sphinx
Even though we refer to the Great Sphinx of Giza as being a Sphinx, that’s not entirely correct. It’s actually only relatively recently it has been known by this name. It used to be called the ‘statue of the very great Khepri’ by ancient Egyptians and, later on, the ‘Horem-Akhet’, which means the ‘Horus of the Horizon’. Medieval Egyptians called it various names including ‘balhib’ and ‘bilhaw’… which leaves an important question… what exactly is it?

2. Astronomical Purposes
As with many ancient monuments, there are suspicions that the Great Sphinx was built for purposes beyond simply as a work of art, and there are many who think it actually has astronomical uses.

1. The Secret Passageways
There have been, for a long time, stories and legends that there are secret passageways underneath and inside the Great Sphinx. Scans of the region have found anomalies that could be tunnels or natural phenomena, and in 1995, workers renovating a nearby parking garage found a network of tunnels that led further underground towards the direction of the Sphinx.
