10. Star Classifications
Have you ever noticed that stars names are kind of complicated? You may have seen sci-fi shows or movies where they give stars a category, but things are actually far more complicated. There are 11 different letter classifications, each that refer to a star's temperature, luminosity, and color. O and B type stars, for example, usually appear to be blue, and are some of the hottest objects seen in the universe..

9. Stars Don’t Twinkle
I know, sad but true right? When you look up to the clear sky at night you’ll see a wide range of stars. Looking closely, you will probably even see some of them twinkling, but this apparent switching on and off of the light has nothing to do with the actual stars themselves.

8. How big do stars get?
While our own star, the sun, is a fairly common type throughout the galaxy, there are ones that absolutely dwarf it in terms of size and brightness. In fact, every single star that you see in the night sky is many times larger and brighter than the sun, because it’s only those that produce enough light to reach us.

7. How many stars?
How many stars do you think there are in the Universe? The amazing thing is that, no matter how huge a number you guess, there are probably far, far more out there. To understand how many there actually are, astronomers first calculate the estimated number of galaxies. With our current understanding, it's thought that there are about 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe, stretched out across 45.7 billion light years.

6. Red and Blue
While many images that we see of stars in space have been created with a certain amount of artistic license, there’s one thing for sure… stars can be seen in a wide range of colors, but what we learn from these colors is somewhat counter-intuitive. Two of the colors most often seen are red and blue. On earth, we typically associate the color red with things that are hot, like a fire or a glowing hot piece of metal, and the color blue is more associated with things that are cold, such as ice.

5. How close are stars?
When you look at the sky, especially on a clear night, it seems like the stars are quite close to each other. Our grouping of them together into constellations also gives the impression that there’s not a great distance between them, but this couldn’t be further from reality.

4. Star Groups
Despite the vast distances between star systems, our sun is actually unusual for the fact that it’s on its own. Most stars actually tend to cluster together into groups of two or more. Bound by the gravitational forces, as many as 60 per cent of stars remain in these groups.

3. Star Brightness
Stars come in a variety of shapes and sizes… and brightness. The brightest star in our sky is, of course, our sun… but it’s pretty unremarkable in the grand scheme of things. The dimmest star to have ever been recorded is a brown star called RG 0058.8-2807. It is also the smallest star to have been detected, at only 0.014 times the size of our own sun… and is one million times less bright.

2. The Stars We See At Night
We’ve already seen how there are about 1 septillion stars in the observable universe, but how many do you think are observable with the eye from earth? If you look up on a clear night from a place with no light pollution, the entire sky is dotted with stars, but you're not seeing anywhere near as many as you may think.

1. How long do stars live?
The life expectancy of a star is directly related to its total mass, which indicates how much fuel it has to burn. Somewhat counter-intuitively, those with the biggest mass die much quicker than those that start with less. This is because the bigger the mass of the star, the faster it burns its supply of fuel.

10. The Humanity Star
In January of 2018, a private US space company, called Rocket Lab, launched a satellite called the ‘Humanity Star' into orbit. Unlike most other satellites, this one didn't have a scientific, military, or civil purpose… instead, the 3 feet in diameter disco ball-like object was intended, according to its designers, to be a ‘bright symbol and reminder to all on earth about our fragile place in the universe'.

9. Kosmos 2430
Launched in 2007, the Russian built Kosmos 2430 was a part of the Russian space forces' Oko programme. Crammed full of observation equipment, such as optical telescopes and infrared sensors, its primary mission was to detect ground-based missile launches.

8. Skylab
Skylab was America's first space station and was the home to rotating astronaut crews between May 1973 and February of 1974. It was abandoned with plans to use a newly developed spacecraft, the shuttle, to reactivate it… but with no way to take it to a higher orbit, and delays in the space shuttle program, the station re-entered the earth's atmosphere in 1979 over the southern Indian Ocean.

7. RXTE
NASA's Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer, also known as RXTE, was launched in 1995 with a mission to monitor the environments of black holes and neutron stars by looking at the x-ray wavelengths and hoping to uncover new data about the objects.

6. The GOCE Satellite
The European Space Agency’s ‘GOCE’ satellite was launched in 2009 to map the earth’s gravitational field and oceans in far greater detail than had ever been done before. Costing more than 450 million dollars, the 1 ton, Xenon-ion propelled probe collected extensive valuable readings but, eventually, was destined to succumb to the gravitational forces that it had been measuring.

5. Salyut-7
Salyut-7 was a Russian space station that orbited the earth between 1982 and 1991. It was crewed for the first 4 years, was the 10th space station to enter orbit, and was the last one of the Salyut program.

4. The UARS Satellite
NASA's Upper Earth Research Satellite, or UARS for short, was launched in 1991 to study the earth's atmosphere- with a particular focus on the ozone layer. Weighing 13,000 pounds, it was released by the Shuttle Discovery and operated at an altitude of 370 miles.

3. Tiangong-1 Space Station
China's first space station, Tiangong-1, was a manned laboratory that was in orbit between 2011 and 2018. With a name meaning ‘Heavenly Palace', the craft was used by the Chinese Space Agency to perfect docking capabilities and surpassed its initial intended lifespan by a number of years. As the first part of the Tiangong program, it paved the way for future Chinese missions.

2. Kosmos 954
Launched by the Soviet Union in 1977, Kosmos 954 was the most dangerous satellite re-entry that’s ever happened. The probe was a reconnaissance satellite as a part of the RORSAT programme that monitored ocean traffic with radar.

1. Mir
Before the ISS was launched, the Mir space station was the main permanent base in orbit that hosted crews from agencies across the world. It was initially launched in 1986 and was at the time the largest artificial satellite in orbit. Built with a modular design, extra parts were added over the following ten years, and it was where the record for the longest human spaceflight happened- when Valeri Polyakov lived there for just under 438 days.

9. Water on Mars
Many books, TV shows, and movies have fantasized about colonizing the planet Mars. The only problem is that Mars is not a place that can sustain life in its current state, and just as bad, it does not have any water...or so we thought. In 2018, scans from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered that formations on the planet were actually caused by water that is still there right now.

8. Multiple "Earths"
In February 2017, NASA discovered that there might be 7 Earth-like planets orbiting a dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. In fact, all seven of these planets were found in the same galaxy, which is a very rare thing indeed.

7. Liquid on Titan
Saturn has 53 moons that have been named by scientists, and more could actually be named in the future. One of the most popular of these moons is the one known as Titan. It's been the source of much research, and has even been home to an alien race in the Marvel Comics Universe. During a scan by the Cassini Space Probe of NASA, they found that in certain gorges and canyons of Titan, there are actually pools of liquid, specifically hydrocarbons.

6. Comet Soup
In 2005, NASA sent their Deep Impact spacecraft into a comet called Tempel 1. If you're curious as to why they would destroy one of their craft by crashing it into a comet on purpose, it is because they wanted to analyze the content and particles that were released from the impact.

5. Saturn's Rings
The Rings of Saturn are not only the most defining features of the planet, but also one of the most recognizable things in all of our solar system. Strangely enough NASA speculates that the rings are "dying".

4. Jupiter's Orbit
NASA has long tried to get a spacecraft into Jupiter's orbit. But because of conditions in the planet's atmosphere, it's been a very difficult task. Not to mention, getting a craft near the planet in terms of its position in space is also hard. Yet, on July 4th, 2016, the Juno became the first spacecraft to make it into Jupiter's orbit, which by NASA's own admission was one of the hardest things they've ever done.

3. Supermassive Black Hole
The Hubble Space Telescope is one of NASA's biggest tools in regards to searching deep space for new discoveries, and in February of 2016, the telescope took a picture of a galaxy and found a black hole of astonishing size.

2. Ice Volcanoes
On Earth, volcanoes spew fire, ash, soot, and smoke, but on the dwarf planet (a planet that never matured to full size) called Ceres, the volcanoes ice! This was discovered by NASA via their Dawn Spacecraft in 2015, which was observing Ceres (which orbits between Mars and Jupiter).

1. Reaching Ultima Thule
4 billion miles away from Earth, there is an object known as Ultima Thule. This "celestial body" is actually two round objects made of an unknown composition that are actually fused together. NASA has released the first up-close stereo images of this celestial body via the New Horizons spacecraft, making this the most distant object that a spacecraft from Earth has ever explored.

8. Przybylski’s Star
Przybylski’s star, also known as HD 101065, is hidden within the Centaurus constellation in the southern sky, just beyond what our eyes can see. It’s about four times the mass of the sun and is cooking up elements not normally seen in stars, including uranium. While most stars don’t typically fuse anything heavier than nickel, Przybylski’s star seems to only form heavier elements, which are typically seen in violent events like supernovae.

7. Tabby’s Star
Tabby’s star, more formally known as KIC 8462852, is located about 1,500 light years away, between the constellations Cygnus and Lyre. It was first discovered in 2009 by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope and is hotter, brighter, and more massive than the Sun. Since its discovery, scientists have tracked the light it emits, looking for slight, periodic dips in brightness, which signals the possibility that it’s being orbited by one or more large objects - perhaps planets.

6. Methuselah Star
HD 140283, nicknamed the Methuselah star (after the oldest man in the Bible), is the oldest-known star in the universe. Original estimates put the Milky Way star’s age at around 16 billion years old. This presented a major quandary for scientists, since the Big Bang, and thus the start of the universe, is believed to have occurred 13.8 billion years ago.

5. UY Scuti
The biggest star known to man is the hypergiant UY Scuti, with a radius 1,700 times that of the Sun. UY Scuti was first catalogued in 1860 by German astronomers at the Bonn Observatory, under the name BD-12 5055. It was classified as a variable star after a second detection, during which astronomers noticed that it grows dimmer and brighter over a 740-day period. UY Scuti lies nearly 9,500 light years way, near the center of the Milky Way, within the constellation Scutum.

4. Vega
Located just 25 light years from Earth, Vega is a bright, young star that’s visible from the Northern Hemisphere during the summer. Along with the stars Deneb and Altair, it forms an asterism known as the Summer Triangle, and is part of the constellation Lyra.

3. The Massive R136A1
The big guy is the most massive known star. It lies about 163,000 light-years away, in the Milky Way satellite galaxy of the Large Magellanic Cloud, in the Tarantula Nebula. It’s part of a cluster of 200 extremely bright stars that was first discovered in 1960 by astronomers working at Radcliffe Observatory in South Africa. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope later identified R136A1 as the brightest star within the cluster.

2. The Smallest Known Star
In 2014, scientists discovered the smallest known star, just 40 light-years away from Earth. Its formal name is 2MASS J05233822-1403022, and if it were much smaller, it wouldn’t even qualify as a star. This star is smaller than Jupiter and burns at just 3,272 degrees Fahrenheit - about one-third the surface temperature of our Sun. It shines one- eight thousandth (1/8,000) as brightly as the Sun, and although it’s close, it can only be seen with a powerful telescope.

1. Neutron Star PSR J1748-2446
This neutron star, PSR J1748-2446, claim to fame is its status as the fastest-spinning celestial object in the Universe. Its surface is harder than a diamond, and its density is 50 trillion times greater than that of lead. And, with a magnetic field a trillion times more intense than the Sun, it’s the most extreme neutron star.
