Dalia and Sasha from IH Monterrey give some great advice on how to perform well during a speaking exam. Enjoy!

Glenn Standish tells us what he thinks of his first IH DOS conference

Everyone's heard of Scotland, right? Exceptions to grammar rules are fun to point out too, no? Having a native speaker accent means it's easier to teach English, obviously? The common answer to all these questions is: no. The reason for this is that in each case there can be problems if the teacher does not accommodate to the learners in class. After a brief look at what accommodation is, this talk will look at several aspects of basic ELT practice, from language grading to choosing classroom topics, with this idea in mind to show how an explicit awareness of the theory can help inform teachers' practice to the benefit of learners.

Monica is an IH school director and she explains why putting several of her school's teachers on a online training course has been a great move for her school.

Adrian Underhill's talk at the IH 60th Anniversary Conference
"During my IH time in London, Hastings, visiting affiliates and at Directors' conferences, I met and worked with some extraordinary people in some extraordinary settings. I will talk about what I have learnt and using these examples draw current lessons about how an organisation and its 'atmosphere of practice' affects the learning and careers of all its stakeholders - students, teachers, administrators, managers, and diaspora."

With a Nudge and a Wink: Helping Learners change their Behaviours:
The work of behavioural economists might not, at first glance, seem as though it has much to offer the world of ELT. Yet research into how we make choices, what makes us feel valued and what motivates us towards success has clear implications for classroom practice. In this session we'll look at some of the background research undertaken in the field, discuss what it means for the classroom and arrive at some practical tips and strategies to take away and try out with your students.

The IH Certificate in Online Tutoring gives you the skills you need to tutor online - listen to what course graduate and tutor, Emma Cresswell, has to say about this course!

This week's "Ask IH" tip comes from Kate from IH Moscow, she has some really useful tips on how to improve your pronunciation and fluency. Take a look!

Mark Forehand the DOS of IH Kyiv gives us his feedback about the IH DOS conference this year

This session introduces origami as a simple way of bringing classroom stories to life. We will tell stories with origami puppets, prompts and penguins. Colourful and tactile, origami appeals to the full range of young learner and adult students.

Of course, every student and every group is different. But if we divide classes into eight levels of engagement, we can talk about what it's like to teach groups at each level and how to increase student engagement at both ends of the motivation spectrum. In 'How can I activate my students to speak English?' we'll share ideas that we've found effective over the years, in different situations around the world.

Pair and Groupwork for VYL

Jonathan Doig, IH Vietnam

An IHWO Live Online Workshop

in conjunction with IH YL Conference 2016, IH Malta

Saturday 5th March 11.00 GMT

The Workshop:
We all say that we believe in communicative teaching but many VYL classrooms remain teacher led and limited in language based student to student interaction. This session will discuss why and how we deliver more student led activities with very young learners.

Jonathan:
Jonathan is the Head of Academic for Apollo International House in Vietnam (IH Hanoi and IH Ho Chi Minh City). He has 15 years’ experience in ELT working in a variety of roles at different levels and with different focuses. With 16 centres across those two cities, and more on the way, work keeps him pretty busy!

Richard, who teaches at International House Torun shares some great tips on how you can use podcasts to improve your English.

The English We Speak

English has a long and colourful history which has resulted in a rich and vibrant language that manages to confuse even the most confident language learner with its peculiar and seemingly random pronunciation. This session will look at how the origins of the English language, along with its spelling system, hold the key to unravelling some of its pronunciation mysteries and ways in which this knowledge can be brought into the classroom without boring your students with a historical etymology lesson.

Emma Cresswell

Having spent nearly six years in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where amongst other things she completed her DELTA and became a connoisseur of the local brunch scene, Emma decided that she needed a new challenge. Sticking to Spanish speaking countries, she moved to IH Santander in January to become the DoS. As well as reacquainting herself with the nuances of the local language, Emma is fast familiarising herself with the local culinary scene and the numerous pincho restaurants to be found in her new home.

Emma's interest in etymology stems from a throwaway comment made by an old French teacher. Since then she has been squirreling away interesting facts to entertain people with when out on a pincho crawl.

Maureen McGarvey's presentation at the IH 60th Anniversary Conference:
"The talk explores the cycles of change we have been part of within International House over the past sixty years, using a combination of quotes, picture, music and anecdotes."

To celebrate World teachers' Day and tell our wonderful IH teachers what they mean to us we asked IH students to choose one word to describe their teacher...

Gavin Dudeney's presentation at the IH 60th Anniversary Conference:
"This overview of my relationship with IH and technology moves from my first contact with Computer Assisted Language Learning in 1989 whilst doing my CELTA at IH Picadilly, through development of the Internet Room at IH Barcelona, my prescient and stunning (irony intended) use of PowerPoint at my first Directors' Conference in Lisbon to the development of global projects like Net Languages, and beyond."

Lisa Philips, a tutor on several IHWO online courses, gives us the low down on what to expect from studying online

Martin Parrott's presentation at the IH 60th Anniversary Conference:
"John Haycraft's students were not the only beneficiaries of his inspiring teaching. This talk outlines and explores five key lessons that I learned from working with John and that I still try to apply in my professional life."

IH Cape Town and IH Newcastle share their tips for increasing social media engagement with the rest of the IH network.
