Everyone's heard of Scotland, right? Exceptions to grammar rules are fun to point out too, no? Having a native speaker accent means it's easier to teach English, obviously? The common answer to all these questions is: no. The reason for this is that in each case there can be problems if the teacher does not accommodate to the learners in class. After a brief look at what accommodation is, this talk will look at several aspects of basic ELT practice, from language grading to choosing classroom topics, with this idea in mind to show how an explicit awareness of the theory can help inform teachers' practice to the benefit of learners.

Mark Forehand the DOS of IH Kyiv gives us his feedback about the IH DOS conference this year

This session introduces origami as a simple way of bringing classroom stories to life. We will tell stories with origami puppets, prompts and penguins. Colourful and tactile, origami appeals to the full range of young learner and adult students.

Of course, every student and every group is different. But if we divide classes into eight levels of engagement, we can talk about what it's like to teach groups at each level and how to increase student engagement at both ends of the motivation spectrum. In 'How can I activate my students to speak English?' we'll share ideas that we've found effective over the years, in different situations around the world.

He has 15 years’ experience in ELT working in a variety of roles at different levels and with different focuses. The English We Speak

English has a long and colourful history which has resulted in a rich and vibrant language that manages to confuse even the most confident language learner with its peculiar and seemingly random pronunciation. This session will look at how the origins of the English language, along with its spelling system, hold the key to unravelling some of its pronunciation mysteries and ways in which this knowledge can be brought into the classroom without boring your students with a historical etymology lesson.

Emma Cresswell

Having spent nearly six years in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where amongst other things she completed her DELTA and became a connoisseur of the local brunch scene, Emma decided that she needed a new challenge. Sticking to Spanish speaking countries, she moved to IH Santander in January to become the DoS. As well as reacquainting herself with the nuances of the local language, Emma is fast familiarising herself with the local culinary scene and the numerous pincho restaurants to be found in her new home.

Emma's interest in etymology stems from a throwaway comment made by an old French teacher. Since then she has been squirreling away interesting facts to entertain people with when out on a pincho crawl.
